FED:Unions and pollies ridiculous: Qantas boss
Qantas boss ALAN JOYCE says the airline faces ruin without unless it starts ventures
overseas, but unions are intensifying calls for the government to tighten laws to stop
jobs going offshore.
Union leaders have gone to Camberra, demanding action to stem job losses under a five-year
Qantas plan to start an airline in Asia and other restructuring measures.
Transport Workers Union national secretary TONY SHELDON says for every job in the aviation
industry there are six-and-a-half other jobs attached.
Qantas says one-thousand jobs could go, but unions say the loss could be in the thousands
in Australia, as the airline phases out its older planes and focuses on growth overseas.

FED:Woodside boss says Timor needs LNG project
PERTH, April 20 AAP - Woodside Petroleum chief executive Don Voelte has used his last
annual general meeting with the energy giant to express dismay at the stalemate with the
East Timor government over the stalled Sunrise development.
East Timor's government has effectively blocked the planned liquefied natural gas project
in the Timor Sea because it wants a processing plant built on its shores, rather than
Woodside's preferred floating vessel concept.
Mr Voelte said East Timor needed the project to its boost economic growth and its refusal
to back the plan was disappointing.
The oil and gas giant could sell the asset, but it was not the company's way to give up.
"There's not a government official up there that personally I don't like but when you
take a look at all the failures they've had with their E&P (exploration and production)
industry outside of Sunrise - nine straight dry holes, people have walked away from the
concessions etcetera - they need, let me repeat, they need Sunrise," Mr Voelte told reporters
after the meeting on Wednesday.

Column: OUR VIEWS
Type: Editorial
It was a speech, if not for the ages, then certainly for the moment.
Our "Sputnik moment," President Obama called it in his State of the Union address - and for those who don't remember Sputnik, it was a Soviet satellite that became a symbol of America's capacity to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
"Half a century ago, when the Soviets beat us into space with the launch of a satellite called Sputnik, we had no idea how we would beat them to the moon," the president recalled. "The science wasn't even there yet. NASA didn't exist. But after investing in better research and education, we didn't just surpass the Soviets; we unleashed a wave of innovation that created new industries and millions of new jobs."
The urgency of defeating the Soviet Union in the space race was about far more than space exploration. It was about maintaining and advancing the United States' pre-eminent position as the most powerful nation on Earth. Obama argued in his speech Tuesday night - and he was right - that our country faces an equally urgent challenge today.
As our economy struggles to rebound from the worst recession since the Great Depression and our citizens yearn for a time in our not-so-distant past when jobs were plentiful, the president stepped to the plate and hit a rhetorical home run. The speech was uplifting and forward-looking, eloquent but restrained. There was no hint of showboating oratory, no mind-numbing laundry list of policy proposals, no emotional excessiveness contrived to put lumps in our throats.
VISION ARTICULATED
Obama succinctly laid out the challenge and articulated a vision to address it.
Pundits promptly dismissed the theme of the speech, "winning the future," as a slogan geared to the next round of political posturing in a country where posturing has become the preferred alternative to meaningful discussion of issues. It will make a good slogan, but it was more than that. The president was declaring that the future begins now, that whatever differences of opinion and philosophy have paralyzed us in the past can and must be put aside for the common good.
Time was, the United States owned the free-market economy. We had the best products, the most productive workers, the best ideas, the newest inventions. The world followed our lead and envied our prosperity. But, as the president noted, the world has changed.
Today's markets send capital to the countries where innovation, infrastructure and capacity for growth is the greatest. America can be that place. But it won't be if we retreat, if we wait for positive change to happen on its own.
To compete with the emerging economies of countries such as India and China, we must match their commitment to investing in education, infrastructure and technology, to producing a work force capable of filling the demanding jobs of the future.
"We need to out-innovate, out-educate, and out-build the rest of the world," Obama said. "We have to make America the best place on Earth to do business. We need to take responsibility for our deficit and reform our government. That's how our people will prosper."
Ah, yes. The deficit. The president called for investment in high- speed rail, high-speed Internet, pure research and clean energy technology. He didn't say what all this will cost, or exactly how we will pay for it. Republicans replied to the Democratic president's ambitious agenda by saying "investment" is just another word for "spending."
CUTS WON'T DO IT
To hear the two Republican members of Congress who responded to Obama's speech tell it, all we have to do to get the country moving again is to stop spending and pay down our debt.
The accumulating national debt, soon to be worsened by an impending budget deficit estimated at nearly $1.5 trillion, is a crisis that must be addressed. But obsessing about the debt at the expense of long-term competitiveness is self-defeating.
Republicans seem to believe that the only mandate flowing from their victories at the polls last November was to shrink government and cut spending. But many voters' desire for change was driven by disgust with a power structure that simply wasn't doing anything to address the problems and concerns of the country.
The president offered a plan of action. He will produce a budget next month, but spending bills originate in the Republican- controlled House of Representatives.
Democrats control the Senate, but by too small a margin to push anything through without significant Republican support. If they want to, Republicans can slam the brakes on any or all of the president's initiatives.
That would be a horrible mistake. Some of the president's ideas may not be viable, or may be too expensive. But the two parties need to work together to find a reasonable balance between progress and fiscal restraint. It's what the people want.
And it is, to borrow a phrase, the only way to win the future.

Fed: Fed govt backs sea wall to be built at historic Anzac Cove
By Chi Tranter
SYDNEY, April 15 AAP - Turkey's plan to build a 600m-long sea wall to protect Anzac
Cove at Gallipoli from erosion has been given Australian government backing.
The concrete and stone wall will be between 1.6 and 2.3m high, joining up two other
existing sea walls.
Veterans' Affairs Minister Alan Griffin says the famous headland scaled by the Anzacs
during World War I will disappear into the ocean if nothing is done to curb further erosion.
"Without this investment by Turkey, it is very likely that a location which is pivotal
to the history of our nation would be lost forever," he told reporters in Sydney on Thursday.
A combination of waves and torrential seasonal rain are the main cause of the erosion, he says.
The proposed works are also important for the preservation of battlefields and war graves.
Despite problems with maintaining the area in the past, including controversy over
roadworks at the cove, Mr Griffin is confident the project will be a success.
"Action was taken (in 2004) probably without some of the issues around construction
being properly addressed and evaluated," he said.
"What's occurred since, and the Turkish authorities need to be congratulated for this,
is significant amounts of work done on ensuring that we have the right engineering solution
(to maintain the cove with) minimal impact and maximum maintenance."
Unlike a 2004 design for the sea wall at the cove, this one will not cover the existing beach.
While it requires the top of the headland to be flattened slightly, the soil to be
removed was put there during roadworks well after the Anzac landing in 1915.
Mr Griffin is confident that the project will be completed in time for Anzac Day in 2011.
"We are very confident that the timetable outlined by the Turkish authorities with
respect to tendering and construction will ensure that this work is done in time (for
Anzac Day)," he said.

COLUMN: Online classified site not the bad guy
University Wire
04-04-2006
(Northern Star) (U-WIRE) DEKALB, Ill. -- A group of Chicago lawyers may mean well, but they're trying to fry the wrong fish.
The Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law recently sued Craigslist, an Internet-based community classifieds site, for allegedly running about 100 discriminatory housing ads, according to a March 26 article in the Chicago Tribune.
The lawyers said the Fair Housing Act applies to Web sites just as it does to traditional advertising methods. Congress originally established the act in 1968 to prohibit the publishing of housing ads that state preferences on a number of factors, including race, religion, age and marital status.
The only problem with that assertion is Craigslist doesn't really "publish" the ads. It doesn't screen them or edit them. Users can flag other advertisements if they find them offensive, discriminatory or otherwise inappropriate for the site. Administrators review and remove flagged ads. Craigslist is a community-policed public forum.
There is a section of the Communications Decency Act that says an interactive computer service can't be treated as a publisher of material from other people.
In addition, some of the 100 ads in question aren't even clearly prohibited by law. One mentions that a property is near a church. Another says, "Great apartment for graduate students, married couple or small family."
While some of the ads are indeed discriminatory, such as one saying "no minorities," it is those who post the ads who should be held responsible under the Fair Housing Act.
One would be hard pressed to believe Craigslist tries to perpetuate illegal housing ads. The Web site prominently displays a notice atop the classified housing pages saying that discriminatory housing ads are illegal and should be flagged for removal. The Web site links to information on fair housing laws.
Craigslist doesn't profit from the illegal ads either. Posting is free and open to anyone.
Users of Craigslist post 2 million free housing ads of unlimited length every month, and it would be impossible for Craigslist to continue in its current free and open format if its few employees were required to read every ad before it could be put online.
The Internet is so wonderful because it's been relatively unrestricted. Craigslist is nice because anyone can post, view, or flag an ad, not just people with the right amount of money or influence.
And if the courts decide a Web site is responsible for every post or comment made by anyone, then all that precious freedom will be lost forever. Web forums will never be the same.
The penalty of a free exchange of ideas is having to put up with an occasional affront or lack of comfort. Fair housing is important, but Craigslist is not the enemy. The people who sustain discriminatory housing are the real villains.

FED: Hicks' lawyers to challenge prosecution witnesses
SYDNEY, Aug 4 AAP - Lawyers for Australian terrorist suspect David Hicks plan to challenge
the validity of several prosecution witnesses at his military commission trial in Guantanamo
Bay, Cuba.
The US marine major charged with defending Hicks, Michael Mori, yesterday indicated
the trial before would start with the defence objecting to witnesses on the grounds their
evidence was hearsay, based on unrecorded interrogations or was in the form of a statement
only, The Australian newspaper reported today.
Major Mori's comments follows the resignation of a third US military prosecutor,
US Air Force captain Carrie Wolf, who said she resigned because of concerns the military
commissions were rigged.
Major Robert Preston and Captain John Carr who also resigned from the case complained
in emails that the commissions were designed to ensure guilty verdicts.
Attorney-General Philip Ruddock said it would be inappropriate for him to reveal details
of the witnesses or the nature of their evidence.
"They (the prosecutors) believe it is a substantial case and I make the point that
it's naive to believe you can enter into a trial without people who are going to be able
to depose for the facts for that to be established," he said.

A 21-year-old man has allegedly threatened a driver with a replica gun during a road

A police spokesman says the Punchbowl man is accused of pointing the replica gun at

Police allege the man, who was driving a Nissan 180SX, overtook the other car before
braking heavily, causing the Ford utility to do the same to avoid a collision.
The spokesman says a short distance away both cars were travelling side by side and
the man allegedly pointed the replica gun at the Ford driver.
He was later arrested in his western Sydney home and charged with intent to commit
an indictable offence, possess/use prohibited weapon without a permit and common assault.
He's been granted conditional bail and will appear in Burwood Local Court on March the 7th.

Entrepreneurial Activity Increases as Tulsa, Okla.-Area Corporations Downsize.
By Nicole Nascenzi, Tulsa World, Okla. Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News
Jul. 20--Small-business activity has increased as area corporations have downsized.
At a time when layoffs abound and the business world is rife with scandal, many in the Tulsa area have decided to forsake the corporate life and go into business for themselves.
Local experts say their offices are flooded with entrepreneurs seeking advice and money to jump start their American dream.
"We have seen quite an influx of people recently," said John Blue, coordinator of the Northeastern State University Oklahoma Small Business Development Center in Tulsa.
The center offers a slew of business support services and counseling.
Blue credits the recent increase in traffic at his office to the flood of layoffs the Tulsa area has seen during the past year.
John Anderson, senior vice president for the business services group at the Bank of Oklahoma, said he has seen a significant increase in small business loans recently.
After 25 years in the telecommunications business, Ray Gambill was laid off from Tulsa-based Williams Communications Group Inc. in June 2001, just one day before his family was set to depart on a three-week vacation.
"We decided, `This isn't going to kill us, and I can go back and look for a job,' " Gambill said.
After several weeks in sunny Florida, Gambill came back to the cold reality of a job search and found that the positions available in his field would require him to uproot his family.
Gambill said the family recently built a house in Owasso, and his two children were happy in the Owasso school system.
"I did not want to relocate," he said.
Instead of taking a job in another state, Gambill began to research opening a franchise. His wife, Jackie, said she was "horrified" at the thought of her husband becoming a small business owner.
"He had invested so much time in telecommunications that I thought he should be looking for a job in it," she said.
After hours of Internet research, he kept coming back to one company -- California-based Budget Blinds.
The Gambills flew out to the company's headquarters to learn more about owning a franchise.
Jackie Gambill said she struggled to be supportive of her husband's dreams.
"We didn't know anything about blinds, but he wanted to do it so badly," she said.
Ray Gambill said he underwent weeks of intensive training at the corporation's headquarters and came back to Oklahoma ready to hit the ground running. The Gambills opened a home-based Budget Blinds franchise last October.
Jackie Gambill was still employed at Williams Communications, and her husband's severance package afforded the family some stability while the business was starting up.
Today, the couple could hang window treatments in their sleep.
Ray Gambill recruited the help of another former Williams Communications employee, Stacy Newell, and began to get the business up and running.
To help with the business, Jackie Gambill volunteered to be laid off in May.
"Because of the name Budget Blinds, people think we sell cheap products," Ray Gambill said. "What it really means is that I can find something to fit your budget."
Ray Gambill said he has created window treatments that range from $15 per window up to $800 per window.
To display the high quality of their products, the Gambills opened a store last week in the Owasso Market, a shopping center at the northwest corner of 96th Street North and U.S. 169.
"My friends thought I was nuts," Ray Gambill said.
Now, the entrepreneur said, he makes about the same income he had at Williams Communications but doesn't always have to work a full week.
One of Ray Gambill's friends who questioned his venture into the world of window treatments is Scott Peck. He worked for Gambill at Williams Communications and lost his job last November.
"I was scared, real scared," Peck said.
He had worked hard to buy a farm in Collinsville and said he thought losing his job would put his home and his marriage in jeopardy.
After spending about a week feeling sorry for himself, Peck said he began to think about what to do next. At 41, he was far from retirement age, but did not relish the thought of looking for another corporate job.
"I had always wanted to go into business for myself -- to put money in my own pocket and be my own boss," he said. "When I lost that job, I re-evaluated what was important in my life."
Eventually, Peck decided to go into business as a handyman.
"No job is too small," he said.
Peck said he has done everything from building privacy fences and cleaning pool decks to hanging pictures and repairing leaking refrigerators.
"That list you made for your husband to do, that he is too busy to do -- that is what I do," he said.
At first, business was slow, and he began by doing work for friends. As he slowly built a reputation of being reliable and affordable, business picked up.
Most of his business is from referrals and repeat customers, Peck said.
Peck said his wife, who is still employed at Williams Communications, has been a "huge inspiration."
Although he makes less money than he did working for Williams Communications, the handyman said he is happy.
"Life is a lot simpler now, and I enjoy it."
Not all former employees of Williams Communications decided to forsake the telecom industry.
In the months before he was laid off from the local telecom company, Stan Chase was spending nights and weekends developing his next business venture -- Anodyne Technologies.
With a history in telecommunications dating back to 1995 with the Oklahoma City-based start-up Rock Island Group, Chase said he has an "entrepreneurial spirit" and wanted to start another company.
Chase said he was working with another Williams Communications employee, Brad Thomas, to develop Anodyne.
"As we started to anticipate the layoffs, we accelerated our timeline," he said.
Chase said he lost his job as director of the streaming communications service group in May, and Thomas volunteered to be laid off in June. By July 1, Oklahoma City-based Anodyne Technologies opened its doors.
Currently, the network-services company employs five people and has a sales staff in Tulsa.
Chase said he hopes the company will be profitable by the end of the year and that it eventually will be the major network management and security company for small- and medium-size businesses in this market.
There are others in the Tulsa area who were let go from other companies and then decided to start their own businesses.
Shannon Thompson had worked as a regional vice president for sales and marketing for Webzone, a local Internet service provider. The company was sold to Rocky Mountain Internet, a Denver-based company that later became Internet Commerce and Communications, and the Tulsa office was closed in September.
A week after being laid off, Thompson started Web Solutions of Tulsa with two other former Webzone employees.
The Web page design firm filled in the gap left when Webzone closed its doors, Thompson said.
Armed with an MBA and a marketing background, Thompson said he could have found a job but decided he had enough of failed companies and wanted to go into business for himself.
Like Thompson, Jason Connell said he was tired of working for promising companies that did not deliver.
Connell, a videographer, was laid off from Commercial Financial Services Inc. in 1999, BuyItNow.com in July 2000 and then from Orca Media last February.
"Three times is enough," Connell said. "I got tired of getting excited about where a company was going" only to be let down.
Soon after his last layoff, Connell opened Connell Creations, a video production company. Since then he has been busy creating instructional videos and filming video to be used on real estate and home builders' Web sites.
Like Connell, John Lew had been laid off several times in just a few years.
Lew last his job at Commercial Financial Services in 1999 and then again in August 2001 when CitiGroup Corp., which purchased the Tulsa-based financial services company The Associates, shut down the division where he worked.
Lew spent the rest of 2001 planning and researching options before opening John Lew Photography in January.
"It was one of those critical points in your life," he said. "Photography has always been my passion, and the layoff gave me the opportunity to follow my dreams."
Lew said he specializes in wedding photography and family portraits.
He set up a darkroom in the bathroom of his family's home and develops and prints his black and white work. He uses Fromex Photo Imaging, a local photo lab, to print his color pictures.
Being in business for himself enables Lew to be a stay-at-home father for his three children.
"I'm home in the morning to get the kids off to school and home in the afternoon when they get home," he said.
Lew said he puts his 11-month old son in a "daddy's day out" program two days a week so he can focus on his business. His wife is home on the weekends, when he does most of his photography.
"I'm now doing something I really love to do," Lew said.
The trend of laid-off workers turning into entrepreneurs is not limited to the Tulsa area.
Cliff Eslinger, senior vice president of Spherion Corp.'s human capital consulting group in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., said about 5 percent of the 25,000 or so employees that the outplacement services firm deals with each year decide to start their own businesses.
Eslinger said it is difficult to track entrepreneurs because many laid-off workers do contract or free-lance work during the transition to another job.
He said there are jobs out there for people, but many families do not want to relocate. Also, he said, people take a layoff as an opportunity to get into another line of work.
