Tas: Four children killed in housefire
Four children aged between seven and ten have been killed in a house fire in north west Tasmania.
Volunteer firefighters say they were called to the weatherboard farm cottage in Scotchtown,
near Smithtown, about 11pm (AEST) last night.
A fire service statement says 15 firefighters from Smithtown and Irishtown Fire Brigades
attended the fire, with support from the Smithton State Emergency Service.
The statement says the home was engulfed by flames when the brigade units arrived at
the Lades Road property.
A spokesman says a brother and sister were killed in the fire as well as two other boys.
The mother and father of the dead boy and girl escaped the blaze with their two other children.
Police say the father has been taken to hospital.
Tasmanian Fire Service spokesman WAYNE RICHARDS has told ABC radio the blaze's ferocity
meant fire crews were too late to save the children.
