William Cardinal Keeler, the Roman Catholic archbishop ofBaltimore, will preside at the 2005 Red Mass for lawyers, judges andelected officials 6 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral.
Michael J. Bransfield, the new bishop of Wheeling-Charleston, andWest Virginia priests will assist. A reception will follow.
Red Mass is held to open the civil judicial calendar and is forall faiths.
With origins in 13th century Europe, the tradition first spread tothe United States in New York City in the 1920s. The Saint ThomasMore Catholic Lawyers Society of Charleston, a 125-member barassociation of Catholic lawyers, began the Red Mass here in 1995along with the Rev. P. Edward Sadie, who is rector of Sacred Heart Co-Cathedral.
