NSW: Sydney prepares for $6 million party

US television network CNN is planning to televise Sydney's New Year's Eve celebrations
to six billion viewers worldwide as part of its massive 100 hour live telecast of the
new millennium.

And rain, hail or storm, the Sydney organisers say the harbour city's $6 million new
year's eve party will go ahead irrespective of the weather.

Sydney Lord Mayor FRANK SARTOR says about 1.2 million revellers are expected to flock
to the heart of Sydney for the biggest night of the old millennium.

Executive producer of the event RIC BIRCH has told reporters the gala show will go
ahead in the rain, although the forecast is for fine weather with a threat of high winds.

Party creative director IGNATIUS JONES says the major features of the night will be
a 1.5 kilometre Harbour of Lights lantern parade and the huge midnight fireworks show.
